Photo courtesy of UNC Athletics) I’m not a coach, so it should come as no surprise that I do not watch film like a coach. I don’t self-scout, trying to identify skill deficiencies or gaps in understanding that need to be addressed in practice. I don’t scout opponents, looking for areas of weakness that we can exploit in an upcoming game. I’m also not a local reporter, which means I don’t watch every single one of a team’s games, charting their storylines throughout the week. As a national reporter or analyst, I think my job is to have as broad a perspective as reasonably possible, to try to draw comparisons among teams and players and have a good general sense of the landscape. Week to week storylines, eye-popping performances, conference races, NCAA Tournament forecasting and title contenders, end-of-year awards those are the types of conversations it’s most important for me to be informed about, and watching film is important to doing a better job of ....
The first time defenseman Drew Borkowicz visited Salisbury, he was sold. “I drank the Kool Aid, I fell in love with it the second I stepped into [coach Jim Berkman’s] office. The plaques, the trophies, the pictures. It’s like, ‘Whoa,’” Borkowicz said. Berkman told him right then and there: He expects excellence. He expects you to work harder than you think you can. He expects the best, or you don’t have a place reaping the reward of national titles. “He expects nothing but 100% from you no matter what you do. He holds you to a higher standard than anyone else does,” Borkowicz says. ....
In the offseason, former Notre Dame football player and Navy SEAL Bill Wagasy spoke with the Irish lacrosse team. He asked each player to come up with a word that they’d want used to describe themselves. Jack Kielty’s word was “selfless,” the same word he uses to describe the Notre Dame defense and team as a whole. “The reason Notre Dame has had such a great defensive history is because the guys who play in this defensive system are just selfless players. It’s never the ‘me show.’ It’s never ‘How can I get my name in the headlines?’ It’s ‘How can I get the play that will help my teammate make the next play,” Kielty says. ....
(Photo by Matt Riley/Virginia Athletics) It felt fresh and new, but shockingly familiar for No. 6 Virginia in its 20-11 win against Towson on Saturday. The trio of Payton Cormier (6G, 1A), Connor Shellenberger (4, 3) and Charlie Bertrand (4, 2) combined for 20 points, and the Cavaliers showed the traits of their 2019 title run in an explosive debut to their 2021 campaign. “I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life with this,” said Shellenberger, who played in high school at nearby St. Anne’s Belfield. “Especially after that redshirt year last year, it was really good to be here at Klockner and get that first win.” ....
