Deputy Fire Chief Michelle Denton said state health officials asked the City of Mesa to immunize hundreds of police officers and thousands of school employees last month. âThey said if.you have any left over, you can trickle those over to the City of Mesa essential workers, so we did,â Denton said. Just days later, according to Denton, Maricopa County health officials explained Mesa could not vaccinate the city workers if they were not in category 1A or a priority 1B group. These groups include health care workers, adults over 75, school employees, and public safety workers. It does not include other essential workers beyond that group. ....

In a survey by the district, 76% said they had either gotten the vaccine or were interested. Like many school districts, San Carlos Unified was on spring break when the state decided to close school buildings due to the COVID-19 pandemic last March. This means it’s almost been a year since the district, located on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, started conducting classes remotely. But Assistant Superintendent of Academic Excellence Donna Manuelito said it hasn’t been easy since some students have limited access to the internet and electricity. Teachers have also struggled, and the challenges are apparent when Manuelito sits in on virtual classes. ....

Print Fairview Developmental Center a former state hospital reactivated as an alternate care site during the latest coronavirus surge this week expanded to include a 50-bed memory-care unit for COVID-19 patients that will be operated by a local nonprofit. A temporary wing in the Costa Mesa facility opened its doors Monday, and those in charge of the operation anticipate they may admit up to 25 patients in the week ahead as area care facilities and other agencies refer residents. The space is to be operated by Irvine-based Alzheimer’s Orange County under a $1.5-million contract with the county designed to last for a one-year period, according to Jim McAleer, the organization’s president and chief executive. ....
