North Marshall Dog park takes honors
El Cajon’s North Marshall Dog Park was recently named Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association. The park, next to the El Cajon animal shelter at 1373 N. Marshall Ave., was finished last year and offers a space for gatherings and activities. It features an off-leash dog area with dog bone-shaped benches, a picnic area, and landscaping. The park began as way to provide a multiple-use space for neighboring residents and businesses, as there were no parks or green spaces within walking distance of the nearby communities. Being near the shelter, the park also provides a space for prospective owners to bond with pets. City engineers designed and oversaw construction while the city’s Public Works Department and Urban Corps members, some from El Cajon, built the park. According to the city, 25 applications have been filled for the role and are now being screened. The most qualified candidates will be interviewed by two panels: one community stakeholder panel and a professional one.
The professional panel includes executives in local government around San Diego while the former includes representatives from La Mesa’s school district, its citizen task force on homelessness, the La Mesa Community Police Oversight Board, the faith-based community and the city’s police officer association.
Those who are selected to advance in the hiring process will then be interviewed by La Mesa city staff.
The city estimates that with interviews being completed by the end of March, a new hire announcement may be made in April.
