La Mesa receives 25 applications for police chief job; hire expected in April

LA MESA    Twenty-five potential candidates have applied to become the next police chief in La Mesa, according to city officials who expect to announce the new hire in April. La Mesa’s previous police chief, Walt Vasquez, retired last August. A pair of police captains have been serving as acting chiefs on a rotating basis. Los Angeles-based executive recruiting firm Teri Black & Company is conducting the nationwide search at a cost of $25,400. City Manager Greg Humora said the firm has recruited police chiefs for 10 California cities in the past two years. The application period for the job was open between Jan. 13 and Feb. 15, according to Humora. The 25 applications are now being screened, with the “most highly qualified candidates” to move onto an interview phase.

Recruiting Firm Screening Applications for La Mesa s Next Police Chief

According to the city, 25 applications have been filled for the role and are now being screened. The most qualified candidates will be interviewed by two panels: one community stakeholder panel and a professional one. The professional panel includes executives in local government around San Diego while the former includes representatives from La Mesa’s school district, its citizen task force on homelessness, the La Mesa Community Police Oversight Board, the faith-based community and the city’s police officer association. Those who are selected to advance in the hiring process will then be interviewed by La Mesa city staff. The city estimates that with interviews being completed by the end of March, a new hire announcement may be made in April.
