Print Ten San Diego County schools have been added to the list of 2021 California Distinguished Schools. The state department of education initially honored 102 schools with that designation, including nine from San Diego County. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently broadened the list to include 120 more California senior high schools and one more middle school. The additional San Diego County Distinguished Schools are: Advertisement Classical Academy High School (Escondido Union High School District) Hilltop Senior High (Sweetwater Union High School District) Kearny Digital Media & Design (San Diego Unified School District) Mira Mesa High (San Diego Unified School District) Mission Hills HIgh (San Marcos Unified School District) ....
Mesa High is about to start a makeover. Construction on the historic, 122-year-old school is to begin Tuesdayâ two days before the last day of school in the Mesa Public Schools District. Despite pandemic-related sharp declines in enrollment, MPS continues surging ahead with multi-million-dollar construction and renovation plans. At its March 16 meeting, the Mesa Public Schools Governing Board approved the first chunk of a $40-million â up from $35 million â upgrade at Mountain View High. Earlier, the board gave the green light to the first phase of a $70 million renovation of Mountain View and Mesa high schools. An extensive overhaul of Mesa High and Mountain View campuses with some new buildings and additions, revamped athletic fields and other improvements is funded by the $300 million capital bond issue voters approved in 2018. ....

It comes when a team wins at the Universal Cheerleaders Assn. High School Nationals, held each spring in Florida. Two local teams made their dreams a reality this year, competing in a virtual format where teams had to submit their videos and wait two weeks for the results. ....
Renovations are in at Mesa Public Schools, but staff reductions are not. At its March 16 meeting, the MPS Governing Board approved the first chunk of a $40 million â up from $35 million â upgrade at Mountain View High, calendars for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years and heard that teacher and staff layoffs are not in the works â despite looming budget question marks. As for the calendars, the board approved no major changes, other than the addition of two âprofessional learning days,â with students not in school on days following winter and spring breaks. Associate Superintendent Holly Williams said this item had a split response among the 27,826 responses to a district-wide questionnaire on the calendar. ....
