Pressure mounts on Okura Prestige


TOKYO 16 July 2021: Japanese business entities should stop participation in a commercial real estate project involving Myanmar’s military junta, Human Rights Now, Human Rights Watch, Japan International Volunteer Center, Justice For Myanmar, and Mekong Watch stated in a joint release on Thursday.
They are targeting Yangon’s Y-Complex, where a 399-room Okura Prestige Yangon is due to open in  2022.
Justice for Myanmar alleges that foreign investment is involved in the construction and management of the Y-Complex project that funds land lease fees to the country’s armed forces known as the ‘Tatmadaw’.

(Tokyo) – Japanese business entities should stop their participation in a commercial real estate project involving Myanmar’s abusive military, Human Rights Now, Human Rights Watch, Japan International Volunteer Center, Justice For Myanmar, and Mekong Watch said today. The proposed Y-Complex in Yangon is being constructed on land leased from the country’s armed forces, the Tatmadaw, whose long record of abuses has worsened since the February 1, 2021, military coup.

Rights groups urge Japan to stop real estate project in Myanmar


TOKYO (Reuters) - Human rights groups on Thursday called for Japan to cancel a real estate project involving Myanmar s defence ministry, saying the project is linked to the military, which has waged a deadly crackdown since the February 1 coup.
Japan s private firms and a state entity are engaged in a multi-million dollar hotel and office development on land owned by Myanmar s defence ministry, Reuters reported earlier.
Rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, said https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/07/15/japan-stop-real-estate-project-myanmar Japan failed to assess the risk associated with doing business in Myanmar.
