Joining of 137 teachers, staffers suspended at RU

The authority of Rajshahi University, in an office order today, suspended the joining of 137 teachers, officers and employees, who were recruited by the former vice-chancellor of the university on ad-hoc basis on Thursday, defying govt embargo. Outgoing Rajshahi University Vice Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan violated a ministerial embargo by appointing 137 teachers and staffers on his last day in office yesterday, giving rise to daylong chaos and clashes on the campus.
After news of the recruitments leaked around noon, a clash ensued between leaders and activists of RU Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) who went to the campus to receive appointment letters and a city unit BCL group, which opposed the recruitments.
Shortly afterwards, the education ministry termed the recruitments illegal and formed a four-member committee headed by University Grants Commission member Prof Muhammad Alamgir to investigate the VC s action. ....

Teachers harassed, syndicate meeting suspended at RU

Meanwhile, around 100 current and former leaders of BCL also took position in front of the residence.
As the teachers tried to enter the residence to meet the VC around 10:30am, the BCL men barred and harassed them in front of police and the university s proctorial body. Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman was also harassed in the mob, as he tried to intervene, teachers said.
During that time, a BCL youth shouted at the teachers, saying we will shoot you , which then created an hostile situation involving the teachers and BCL men, they said.
Around 11am, after the incident, the university authority was forced to suspend the meeting. Earlier on Sunday, a finance committee meeting was also suspended in the same way. ....
