Schools win at polls; Paris, Bogata voters elect new city council members


Voters approved bond referendums at both North Lamar and Prairiland school districts at the polls Saturday, and seated city council members and school trustees across the Red River Valley.
North Lamar ISD voters approved a $51.55 million bond in five propositions to build a new elementary school, make improvements at all campuses, purchase 15 new buses, purchase laptops, iPads and charging carts to allow a 1:1 ratio of student to learning device, improve athletic facilities and build a larger band hall.
“We appreciate the confidence that our community has in North Lamar ISD,” Superintendent Kelli Stewart said. “The victory of this election belongs to our students. They are the real winners, and for that we are eternally grateful to the voters that supported this bond.” ....

North Lamar, Prairiland bonds pass in May election


As the results come in from the May 1 local and school elections, the results will be posted here.
All of the North Lamar bond propositions passed. The $51.55 million bond measure — the latest of several in the past five years. This time, the bond was broken up into five different propositions, so voters can choose which propositions they would like to move forward with.
Proposition A focuses on aging classrooms and academics, with $43 million for demolishing Higgins Elementary and constructing a new building, renovations and improvement to Stone Middle, Bailey Intermediate and Everett and Parker elementary schools. The measure passed 1,401 for to 721 against. ....

VALLEY VISIONS: Paris Economic Development Corp. to remain on firm financial footing


Paris Economic Development Corp. looks for opportunities to attract new industrial prospects while it gives support to companies already here as Lamar County and the Red River Valley recoup from the challenges of a year-long battle with the novel coronavirus.
Although the local economy may have not suffered as much as other parts of Texas, as indicated by increased sales tax revenue, the lifeblood of the economic engine, future sales tax revenue remains uncertain with the closing of several retail outlets within the city.
To prepare for uncertainties, the newly expanded seven member PEDC board, up from a previous five members, in early February took a look at the organization’s financial status and has since brought on board both a local accounting firm and a legal firm to ensure the organization stays its course. ....

Paris Economic Development Corp. continues work on loan from City of Paris


Paris Economic Development Corp. directors gave staff authority to seek proposals for a line of credit at a Tuesday meeting, perhaps a prerequisite for borrowing money from the city in an attempt to save the economic engine money while providing added revenue to city coffers.
The idea to lower the interest rate PEDC currently pays locally on borrowed funds and to increase the amount of interest the city receives on investments has been discussed in the past by both Paris City Council and the PEDC board.
At an April 12 meeting, city councilors directed staff to obtain a secured loan of some type backed by land or perhaps a line of credit in the amount of money the organization plans to borrow from the city. ....

EDITORIAL: The time to vote is now


Every vote counts, and now is the time to make your voice heard at the ballot box if there’s a local race or proposition affecting you.
Early voting for the May 1 election started Monday. Not everyone in the Red River Valley will need to vote because many races went uncontested. That means it’s your responsibility to know whether there’s a race or proposition to vote on based on your home address.
Two school districts have bond proposals up for voter consideration. One is Prairiland ISD’s $7.5 million bond to add classrooms to Blossom Elementary and its junior high, as well as improvements and renovations throughout the district. The bond, if passed, will not raise property taxes because there’s a funding agreement between the district and six new solar farms within it. ....
