Micanopy's Tuscawilla Road designated as scenic road corridor

Alachua County got its first scenic road designation since 2004 the county s sixth overall Tuesday, with Micanopy s Tuscawilla Road.
County commissioners voted 3-2 to give the designation to the two-lane road between Cholokka Boulevard in the Micanopy town limits and U.S. Highway 441, which brings the road additional protection.
The roadway meets several of the criteria for designation, as outlined by the county, including scenic, archaeological and historical significance.
Commissioners Chuck Chestnut and Mary Alford voted against the measure due to concerns about access to a planned commercial property, a Dollar General, being built near the roadway. Trucks weighing more than 25,000 pounds will not be allowed on the road without a variance from the county, and commissioners voted down such an exemption. ....

Suicide tangles traffic as investigators delve into I-75 crash

An apparent suicide on Interstate 75 at the Millhopper Road overpass blocked northbound traffic Thursday afternoon while travelers headed south were slowed, agencies reported.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, a 48-year-old man from Myrtle, Mississippi, jumped off the overpass around 3:30 p.m. and hit a northbound trailer before ultimately landing on the inside emergency lane.
The jump was fatal for the Mississippi man, and his next of kin has been notified, the release said. The driver, a 62-year-old man from Brinson, Georgia, who traveled in a 2019 Kenworth tractor-trailer and was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.
Motorists were urged to find alternate routes and the incident tied up area traffic for a time as officials investigated. ....

A man died by suicide after he jumped from the Millhopper Road bridge into oncoming northbound traffic on I-75 Thursday, according to law enforcement. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash due to vehicle impact.
Police have not identified the man or his age as of Thursday evening, Alachua County Sheriff s Office Spokesperson Sgt. Frank Kinsey said. No other people were injured.
At 3:35 p.m. the 911 communication center operator which serves local police, firefighters and ACSO received a call about a disturbed and upset person on the bridge, Kinsey said. The center received several calls after, and an ACSO officer was sent to the scene before the man jumped. ....
