Fiorentini turned down the opportunity to buy the 97 Corliss Hill Road land for $400,000 in March, Essex County Greenbelt is expected to tell city councilors tonight how it may still be preserved. At the time, the mayor said the city had only a 120-day right of first refusal and he chose to forgo the offer in favor of buying a 29.4-acre Brandy Brow Road parcel closer to the Millvale Reservoir watershed. Asked what changed, resident Christine Kwitchoff told WHAV the city has more time to act than first believed. ....

The MS Captain Red, a 105-feet long, 28-feet wide passenger ship, is expected to make its arrival in downtown Haverhill during high tide this Friday. In advance of its arrival, major heavy-duty moorings were installed by crane Sunday in the Merrimack River, off Water Street in Haverhill. Tonight, members of the Haverhill Harbor Commission meet to work on final details. To protect the city’s drinking water supply, the Haverhill City Council voted Tuesday to take by eminent domain land on Groveland Bridge Road abutting the East Meadow River. The Council agreed to the purchase the land several months ago, but there was a title issue, requiring a re-evaluation of the exact dimensions of the property. In doing so, another problem came to light. City Solicitor William D. Cox Jr. explained. “So we were able to clear that discrepancy up and we came across another issue that state law and our charter prohibit us from purchasing real estate that exceeds 125 percent of the average assessed valuation over the preceding years, and that figure was only about $41,000 and the purchase price here is $272,000,” Cox said. ....
