What do sharks, mysterious sinkholes, Indigenous foods, poaching and Milwaukee harbor have in common?
All were topics of the most-viewed stories on Great Lakes Echo last year.
And more than half – nine – of the most popular 16 stories dealt with wildlife
Some on the top-16 roster were newly reported in 2020, including ones about mysterious sinkholes under Lake Huron and recipes for Great Lakes Indigenous foods.
But other stories displayed a long lifespan of reader attention, including the most popular one – about bull sharks in the Great Lakes (not) published in 2015. The longest-lived – about regulating water levels on the Great Lakes – first appeared in 2009. ....

Port Director Adam Tindall-Schlicht says the “Harbor Seagull” began taking on water over the weekend, and sank next to a harbor-owned dock around 5:30 a.m. on February 22, 2021. ....

Port Milwaukee finished 2020 with its highest annual cargo volume in the past seven years.
Despite the unusual year s historic and unprecedented difficulties, including pandemic- and flooding-related challenges, overall tonnage for the municipal port and the adjacent private docks in Milwaukee Harbor rose more than 5%, led by agricultural exports and handling of cement.
“Port Milwaukee’s resilience was on full display in 2020. We overcame flooding resulting from unusually high water levels on Lake Michigan at the start of the year. We also overcame the pandemic’s sustained effect on the economy and on the Port’s essential operations,” said Port Director Adam Tindall-Schlicht. “Our workforce, our partners, and our customers deserve enormous credit for this past year’s successes.” ....
