Comment | In our current dystopian art market, the pervasive and persistent Damien Hirst may well have the last laugh

Damien Hirst is considered a safe bet in a troubled art market

I am spending a lot more time at my desk these days. Sat with me at the moment is a copy of Gregor Muir’s rip-roaring 2009 memoir
Lucky Kunst: the Rise and Fall of Young British Art. On its cover, Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst exude Cool Britannia, not quite smiling out of a backdrop of Hirst-inspired spots. All are seemingly consigned to a 1990s London past.
The view from the 2020s is not so clear cut. Emin has pretty much become a national treasure with the dubious advantage of being too-long undervalued on the market. Neither can be said of Hirst, although he is certainly having something of a revival out of tougher times. ....

It’s not often that a gallery especially one with “mega” status hands over an entire space to a single artist for a year. But such is the star power of Damien Hirst that Gagosian invited the British artist to take over its Britannia Street gallery, one of its three London spaces, this year and Hirst is poised to start with a bang.
When London’s lockdown restrictions lift on April 12, Hirst will unveil a series of (mostly) never-before-seen “Fact” paintings and sculptures that he has been making over the past 15 years. ....

One of the world’s mightiest galleries has handed over its keys to one of the world’s most famous artists. Damien Hirst will organize all the shows at Gagosian’s Britannia Street location in London for the entire next year. The shows will consist of Hirst’s own work.
Hirst’s Britannia Street debut will be a show of his hyper-realistic “Fact” paintings and sculptures. “The idea of variations of truth seems relevant just now,” Gagosian director Millicent Wilner tells the
Financial Times. He will also show a large canvas depicting a butterfly (from 2009), replica shelves of cleaning products (2015) and a painting of the 2019 fire at Notre-Dame in Paris, the paper reports. ....
