After 'Devastating' 2020, B-N Tourism Chief Looks To Road Trippers For A Summer Rebound

The Illinois Shakespeare Festival returns to the Ewing Cultural Center in Bloomington after a COVID hiatus.
Bloomington-Normal’s tourism chief says she hopes to attract a lot of road trippers this summer, as vaccinated Americans venture back out again after spending last year cooped up.
“It looks much better. It actually looks better than the next 6 months, the rest of the year,” said Crystal Howard, president and CEO of the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
There are over 50 events happening in Bloomington-Normal this summer, including many outdoor ones. One notable returning event (after a 2020 cancellation) is the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. ....

Bloomington Council OKs $5 Million To Resurface Streets

The Bloomington City Council Monday night approved spending the bulk of its annual roadwork budget on a $5.1 million street resurfacing plan.
Also during the virtual meeting, the council voted to bring the Bloomington Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau to downtown and learned how the city plans to share $700,000 in federal housing assistance grants.
The council voted unanimously for Rowe Construction, part of United Contractors Midwest, to complete the resurfacing. Technical bidding requirements were waived.
Public Works Director Kevin Kothe said while last year’s resurfacing focused on major stretches such as Hershey and Six Points roads, this upcoming project list is much longer, as crews will hit more neighborhood streets. ....

Bloomington Council Refinances Bonds, Saves $560,000 In Interest Payments


Bloomington City Council met remotely Feb. 22, 2021.
The Bloomington City Council on Monday agreed to refinance some of its general obligation bonds, a move that’s expected to save about $560,000 in interest payments. 
“We’ve done this before,” said City Manager Tim Gleason. “This is a relatively small bond refinance. But you’re going to be shocked at the amount of money we’re going to save.
Also at the virtual meeting, the council agreed to delay a decision on a Welcoming Cities ordinance draft to add clarification to the process, and heard reports on the John M. Scott Health Trust and on the upcoming budget. ....

Miller Park Zoo presents Wild Lights event

Miller Park Zoo will continue hosting its 12th annual Wild Lights event from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Those who wish to see the lights can contact Miller Park Zoo at (309) 434-2250 to register and purchase tickets. Tickets are $5 for non-members and free for members.
To witness hundreds of lights around the entire zoo masks will be required and activities will follow the state s COVID-19 requirements.
“I think it’s a nice thing for people to be able to do to get out of the house a bring Christmas joy, Guest Services and Volunteer Coordinator Morgan Hinchen said. ....
