Big revamp under way at Brewery entertainment venue in Kendal


A KENDAL entertainment venue is undergoing an extensive revamp and will boast a refurbished cinema, boutique ‘digital lounge’ and live streaming equipment when it reopens.
The ambitious £850,000 project at the Brewery has been facilitated by grant funding from organisations such as Cumbria County Council and Arts Council England.
Miriam Randall, chief executive of Brewery Arts - shortened from the old Brewery Arts Centre name - said the upgrade ‘breathes new life’ into the venue.
“This project puts cultural innovation and talent development at the heart of our work,” she said.
“When we reopen it will be a space for everyone to enjoy, a creative hub at the heart of community life that develops and showcases some of the most exciting artists and creatives working today.” ....

Cash boost for cinemas described as 'godsend'


The money was described as a godsend by Dorothy Smith, managing director of Zeffirellis in Ambleside.
The funds from the British Film Institute, issued on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, have seen more than 202 cinemas supported across England so far.
Among those to benefit are Zeffirellis, the Roxy in Ulverston, and the Royalty in Bowness, which have received around £140,000, £40,000 and £80,000 respectively.
“It’s a life-saver to be quite honest, cinemas desperately need it at the moment,” said Mrs Smith.
“It’s not just about the film, it’s about being a hub, somewhere for people to go to and socialise and see friends.” ....
