Ex-Miyakojima mayor arrested for suspected bribery

Japanese police have arrested a former mayor of an island city in Okinawa Prefecture on suspicion of taking a bribe in connection with a land sale for a Ground Self-Defense Force camp.
Police on Wednesday arrested former Miyakojima City Mayor Shimoji Toshihiko, along with his acquaintance, Shimoji Fujiyasu, a company executive.
Police suspect the mayor received 6.5 million yen, or about 59,000 dollars, from the acquaintance in 2018.
The police say this was in return for helping the acquaintance to sell a golf course he operated on Miyakojima Island to the Defense Ministry.
Police have not made clear whether the two suspects have admitted to the allegations. ....

Japan has been moving rapidly to strengthen its capability to defend the southwestern Nansei islands amid China’s growing military pressure on Taiwan.
The moves are part of Tokyo’s efforts to brace for a contingency surrounding Taiwan near the remote islands that are part of Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures. ....

Chinese carrier sails between Japan s islands
Japan s Defense Ministry has confirmed that a Chinese aircraft carrier group, led by the Liaoning, has returned to the East China Sea from the Pacific, after passing through waters between two Japanese islands.
The ministry says the Maritime Self-Defense Force confirmed that during the period from Monday to Tuesday the Liaoning, accompanied by five other vessels, sailed northward between Okinawa s main island and Miyakojima Island, and then entered the East China Sea.
Early in April, the fleet was seen sailing south in the same area and entering the Pacific.
This is the second time that the Chinese aircraft carrier has passed between the two Japanese islands on a round trip. ....
