My neighbour has an ancient lift pump to get rainwater water from an underground tank. It s in a bit of a state but most of it s brass with a cast iron bottom section so I have high hopes of renovating it for another sixty years. It s a pressurised model with a pressurised reservoir of a few litres (clever idea) and the two valves use 2 inch check balls. The originals look like hardwood (it s probably at least 60 years old) and are flaking and chewed up. I did the usual google trip and there are several sources of 2 check valves with the right sized balls but no one seems to have actual replacement balls. If I grind the seatings to remove any sharp bits then hard plastic snooker balls would probably stand it but something softer would be better, I think. ....
Hi Brian, I did think it rather odd, but I milled and filed a small bit of mild steel down til it fit the keyway on the shaft, and it was 4mm wide. When I fitted one of the change gears, the key slot appeared wider than it was tall, and a quick measurement with digital calipers gave me 3.5mm high. This did surprise me a bit, as I was expecting it to be 4mm, although measuring the height of the key slot accurately was a bit difficult with the digital calipers, so that may account for it. It does look physically wider than it looks tall, though. ....
Any lathe i get will have to be a bench top model, And i want power cross feed, and ideally a quick change gearbox, i dont mind change gears, but i do like the idea of a few twists of a lever or 2 to alter feed speeds and that, any threading i do will be metric, and nothing exotic, i can t even see me ever needing to turn a left hand thread really. But what is there out there? i did briefly look at the chester centurion 3 in 1 machine, about £1800 new (ideal would want a second hand one) a mill and a lathe in one.. as i m after a small mill too, it even has power cross feed and all that, ....
Hi Recently retired and i ve always wanted to finish a project of making a working model steam engine that i started with our teacher at school in metalwork. Now seems the right time. I served my apprenticeship as a tuner, back in the late 70 s at Crabtree Vickers, but it s been many a moon since i used a lathe, so I ve a bought a little ZELUS 7 x 14Inch Mini Lathe to start off with. First though, i think i need to get my eye back in and make a few basic things. Looking through some threads has given me some ideas ,so i m looking at buying some material stock . Anyway my laboured question is what sizes (round bar, flat bar, sheet), material (steel, brass, aluminium) etc would make a good store of stock for model engineering ....
