Advertisement Australia s 2020 was marked by a sharp shift from severe heat and drought at the start of the year to the coolest and wettest December since a big La Nina a decade ago. For 2020 as a whole, the country had its fourth-warmest year in records going back to 1910, with mean temperatures 1.15 degrees above the 1961-90 benchmark used by the Bureau of Meteorology. Only 2019, which was Australia s hottest and driest year, 2013 and 2005, were warmer. It s strange that we almost shrug our shoulders, Andrew Watkins, head of the bureau s climate prediction services, said, adding, it s a significant record given 2020 included a La Nina event in the Pacific from September onwards, which tends to drive cooler-than-average conditions. ....
