Clashes and boycotts have marked the third phase of voting in 62 municipalities to elect new representatives to the posts of mayor and councillors.

The polls opened at 8 am Saturday and continue until 4 pm without any interruption. The votes were cast using traditional ballot papers.
The Election Commission spoke of taking special precautions to ensure a peaceful election environment after clashes during the first two rounds of the polls.
However, the measures had little impact on what came to be.
Mayoral candidates of the BNP raised complaints of fraudulent voting in Natore’s Singra, Kishoreganj’s Katiadi and Satkhira’s Kalaroa and subsequently announced a boycott of the elections. ....

Terming the latest Chattogram City Corporation election a model of polls irregularities, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar today said the authorities concerned need to find a way out to hold future elections in a more fair and credible manner.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda in a press conference on Thursday said, “We are here to remove the confusion which may have been arisen in the public mind. The statement blaming EC is totally unacceptable.”

Those who said people are losing faith in elections have an ill motive, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said yesterday, referring to a press conference by 42 distinguished citizens.
He told reporters at his office that elections had been competitive with 60 to 70 percent voter turnout.
It has been reported that eminent citizens urged President Abdul Hamid to form a supreme judicial council to probe allegations against the election commission, he said.
