Primary school lodges appeal against proposed bottle store in Pleasant Point

Singh Trading has been granted a liquor off-licence to operate a bottle store in this former cafe in Pleasant Point, but the decision is now subject to an appeal.
A Pleasant Point primary school has lodged an appeal against a decision to allow a new bottle store to open the small South Canterbury town.
St Joseph’s School principal and board of trustees member Aroha Stewart confirmed an appeal had been made to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (ARLA) but would not comment further.
On April 6, the Timaru District Licensing Committee (DLC), comprising Sharyn Cain (commissioner), Peter Burt, Gavin Oliver and David Jack, approved Singh Trading (2016) Ltd director Mandeep Singh’s application to open a Bottle-O liquor store at 57 Main Rd, Pleasant Point, in premises previously used for a cafe. ....

The Wellington City Council today confirmed the decision of its strategy and policy committee and agreed to add mana whenua representation to council committees, with the representatives having a vote and being paid.
Mayor Andy Foster and Cr Sean Rush changed their votes and supported the plan, leaving opposition from only three councillors. They had voted against the plan at the previous committee meeting.

Wellington City Council vote to add mana whenua
representation to Council committees later this year, with
representatives both having a vote and being paid.
The
Council voted 11-3 to enable one representative each from
Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Ngāti Toa
Rangatira to sit on each Council committee and subcommittee
and have voting rights, from 1 July.
The arrangement
would not extend to the Council’s CEO Performance Review
Committee, the city’s two community boards or District
Licencing Committee.

Wellington City Councillors have voted 11-3 to add mana whenua representation to council committees.
From July 1, Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Ngāti Toa Rangatira will each have members with voting rights on all council committees and subcommittees except the CEO Performance Review Committee, the city’s two community boards and the District Licensing Committee.
