Teachers' union says discrimination against it has been confirmed


The Union of Professional Educators has welcomed a decision by the Office of the Ombudsman which found that it had discriminated against by the authorities when its officials were not allowed to hold union activities in schools.
The union is not recognised by the Education Ministru since the majority of teachers are members of the Malta Union of Teachers. 
The Ombudsman decision, based on a complaint filed a year ago, was signed by former chief justice Vincent de Gaetano, who is education commissioner within the Office of the Ombudsman. 
The union had complained that its officials were not allowed to make official visits to schools, distribute material and hold meetings there with teachers during breaks.   ....

COVID-19 hospitalisation rate lowest since August as schools reopen


The number of COVID-19 patients needing hospital care has plummeted to the lowest level since August, fresh data by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control shows.
People are being admitted to hospital at a rate the same as in mid-August, with 0.77 patients per 100,000 people receiving care. The rate had peaked during the final quarter of 2020 and again in February and March.
The number of cases requiring intensive care has also dropped in recent weeks and is now similar to what was recorded during the first week of January. According to the ECDC data, the rate for ITU admissions is around 0.19 patients per 100,000 people. ....

The MUT says it is still in discussion with the ministry over the physical reopening of schools from Monday
Updated at 2pm with the Union of Professional Educators statement 
The Malta Union of Teachers is still in talks with the Education Ministry over the staggered reopening of schools next week.
The reopening of schools physically will occur from 12 to 16 April with childcare centres, kindergarten centres and primary schools opening on Monday, middle schools opening on Wednesday and secondary schools on Friday. All post-secondary schools will remain online. ....
