As soon as the buses started lining up at Upper St. Clair High School, a trio of student council members sprang into action.
Moving quickly from vehicle to big yellow vehicle, juniors Sarah Christensen, Molly Maher and Tori Slagle knocked politely on the front doors and were greeted by friendly drivers who were in for a big surprise.
âThank you!â the students said as they delivered bags full of baked goods and letters of gratitude to each of the good folks behind the wheel.
The occasion was School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, and on the afternoon of Feb. 26, student council members in ninth through 12th grades were out in force to display a variety of well-wishing signs and banners. Even the schoolâs Panther mascot was on hand to help cheer on the drivers as they sampled the goodies delivered by Sarah, Molly and Tori.
When the future of an iconic music venue is on the line, artists and music lovers haven’t just stood around. Colleen Cowie reports from Minneapolis where a group of volunteers created the First Love Project, a compilation album that gives back to the famed music venue, First Avenue. Listen here:
Like many Minnesotans, musician and guitar technician Molly Maher has many favorite memories from inside First Avenue’s star-studded walls.
“First Avenue is truly the holy grail of venues,” says Maher. “Emmylou Harris turned 50 and she was playing First Avenue and somebody in the crowd made her a birthday cake. And to see Lucinda Williams get married! It’s not just a local iconic stage for us – it’s embraced all around by the music community all around the states and all around the world.”
