KUALA LUMPUR: Law firm Zaid Ibrahim & Co (ZICO) today said it will not surrender documents to its founder Zaid Ibrahim for the purpose of his civil action against the firm’s partners.
Lawyer Tommy Thomas, appearing for ZICO, said they are objecting against Zaid’s discovery application to obtain the documents on the grounds that he is not entitled to them. ....

Federal Court rules Selangor law criminalising 'unnatural sex' is void

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court has ruled that a Selangor state law which criminalises unnatural sex is void as the state legislature had no power to make such laws.
In a unanimous decision, Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat today said it was the court s view that Section 28 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 was enacted in contravention of a state list that stipulated that state legislatures have no power to make law in regard to matters included in the Federal list.
To that extent, Section 28 is inconsistent with the Federal Constitution and is therefore void, she said in delivering the decision through an online proceeding. ....

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s highest court on Friday found news portal Malaysiakini in contempt of court over comments posted by readers deemed offensive to the judiciary, in a case widely seen as a test of media freedom in the Southeast Asian nation.
Last year, Malaysia’s attorney general filed an application to cite Malaysiakini and editor-in-chief Steven Gan for contempt over five comments posted by readers on its website that it said undermined public confidence in the judiciary.In a six to one decision on Friday, a Federal Court panel found Malaysiakini was fully responsible for publishing the readers’ comments that “undermined the system of justice in the country” and fined the news portal 500,000 ringgit (S$164,440). ....
