Colorado Springs man gets life in prison for double-killing, follows with profanity-laced tirade

A jury Friday convicted a Colorado Springs man in a 2018 double-slaying in which two people were shot in the head and left in a burning car in a scheme to steal up to a pound of marijuana.
The panel found Nashid Rayon Rivers guilty of multiple counts of first-degree murder in the drug-heist killings of Serena Garcia, 21, and Marcus Denton, 20, on the city’s southwest side. Rivers also was convicted of aggravated robbery, tampering with human bodies and other counts. GUEST COLUMN: Leaving a long career serving the community

In a few days, I will leave office after a prosecutorial career spanning almost 40 years. Before I leave, I’d like to take a moment to thank the citizens of the Pikes Peak region for entrusting me with leading the incredible men and women of the 4th Judicial District (Teller and El Paso counties) for the past 12 years.
Hard to believe, but we are the busiest DA’s office in the state, handling 32-35,000 cases per year, or in my 12 years as DA about 350,000 to 400,000 cases. We have grown to over 240 employees, 90 attorneys, and over 125 volunteers. You can be proud of the hard work, dedication, and professionalism that they have devoted to each one of these cases and the compassion with which each crime victim has been treated. ....
