A two-week diversion of maternity patients from White Rock s Peace Arch Hospital because of a shortage in pediatric care has many calling for action.
Earlier this week, Fraser Health announced it would be diverting expecting patients who required labour and delivery support to other hospitals from July 8 to July 19, leaving many labouring moms scrambling to find a backup plan.

Opinion: B.C.'s second housing crisis

An example of an inaccessible building under construction.
For many British Columbians, the struggle for equal access and independence has been long. Our communities continue to have too many barriers for people living with disabilities, who make up nearly 25 per cent of the province’s population. Thankfully, society’s views about disability are evolving. However, despite this societal shift and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms enshrining the protections of those with disabilities, many people continue to feel disenfranchised.

Will BC's Landmark New Legislation Adequately Address Disability Rights?

“Specifically, it gives us a way of identifying barriers, removing barriers and preferably preventing them from being established in the first place.”
The bill defines a barrier as “anything that hinders the full and equal participation in society of a person with an impairment,” and notes it could be “caused by environments, attitudes, practices, policies, information, communications or technologies, and. affected by intersecting forms of discrimination.”
The bill also gives cabinet the power to identify, remove and prevent barriers. It allows for an advisory committee to be struck and for a director to be appointed who can assess fines for certain contraventions of the act. ....

COVID-19: B.C. promises more access to pandemic information

Article content
Officials have vowed to provide more information on how COVID-19 is affecting specific neighbourhoods after criticism that B.C. is withholding crucial figures from the public.
Despite that, the provincial health officer defended the province’s release of figures, insisting officials release as much information as they can and denying that B.C. falls behind other provinces in terms of transparency.
