The US state of Wisconsin’s first large-scale solar farm only went online in late 2020, but electric and gas delivery holding company WEC Energy Group has just proposed plans for a 310MW solar power plant with 110MW of battery storage.
The proposal for the Paris Solar-Battery Park in Kenosha County was filed with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin yesterday. If approved, construction would begin in 2022 for commissioning in 2023. WEC Energy Group, which serves around 4.6 million customers in four states, said that two of its utility subsidiaries, Wisconsin Public Service and We Energies, would own 90% of the project. Another smaller Wisconsin utility provider, Madison Gas & Electric (MGE), would own the remaining 10%. ....

A 20MW / 18MWh containerised battery energy storage solution in Switzerland, which went online late last year. IHS Markit predicts that while the US will dominate this year and the Asia-Pacific region will rapidly grow market share in the coming years, Europe will see a growth in installations year-on-year of about 70% in 2021. Image: MW Storage AG.
Analysis and research firm IHS Markit has predicted that over 10GW of new energy storage will be deployed during this year, with around half of those additions in the US market.
The company said in a new report that this would be more than double the 4.5GW of global capacity additions in 2020. Meanwhile the US’ strong lead will continue with the market gaining in share until 2023, when IHS Markit senior analyst for clean technology George Hilton said the pipeline in the country reduces. ....

Leading by example: New York Power Authority, energy storage and a vision for the climate battle

New York has some of the most aggressive clean energy policy goals in the world via its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, targeting decarbonisation of its electricity sector by 2040. Energy storage is expected to play a vital role, with the Act introduced by Governor Andrew Cuomo including a target of 3GW of storage deployment by 2030 to support the transition away from reliance on fossil fuels.
New York Power Authority (NYPA), a public power organisation which serves around a quarter of the US state’s electric load, said on the release of its strategic plan VISION2030 in December that it wants to lead by example with a commitment to cost-effective clean energy that could see NYPA reach emissions-free electricity by 2035. ....

Dozens of zinc-bromine flow battery units will be deployed at 56 remote telecommunications stations in Australia, supplied by manufacturer Redflow.
They are being installed as part of an Australian Federal government initiative to improve the resilience of communications networks in bushfire and other disaster prone areas of the country. Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) is a multi-faceted programme worth AU$37.1 million (US$28.85 million) in total. ....
