Miss Hospitality 2021 to be held in Hattiesburg: Who is competing?


In its 24th year as host city, Hattiesburg is welcoming 36 young woman from across the state this week as they compete for the title of Mississippi’s Miss Hospitality and more than $100,000 in scholarships and prizes.
The Mississippi Miss Hospitality program was created in 1949, and the winner of this annual competition serves as goodwill ambassador for economic development and tourism, Marlo Dorsey, executive director of VisitHATTIESBURG, said at a Monday press conference.
The 72nd annual Mississippi Miss Hospitality competition, open to women ages 18-24, will take place at the historic Hattiesburg Saenger Theater, 201 Forrest St. Preliminary competitions are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The final competition is 8 p.m. Saturday. ....

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - VisitHATTIESBURG celebrated National Tourism Week Wednesday by honoring its tourism partners with a grab-and-go BBQ lunch event.
In 2020, even though the tourism industry was lacking due to travel restrictions with COVID-19, the city of Hattiesburg alone accumulated $257 million in tourist spending over the year.
According to statistics from the Bureau of Labor, Mississippi is the number one state in year-over-year tourism spending between 2019 and 2020. According to VisitHATTIESBURG Executive Director Marlo Dorsey, Hattiesburg was coming off of the largest year in Hattiesburg history when in comes to tourism in 2019. ....

Hattiesburg 'Courage' mural features Jesse L. Brown, military heroes


The Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art unveiled its first project of 2021 Friday. Titled Courage, the new mural is located adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park. The piece honors acts of courage exhibited throughout Hattiesburg’s history.
The mural is the work of Pine Belt artist River Prince. Measuring 18 feet tall and 115 feet wide, the design features the seals of all five U.S. military branches and is the largest mural in Hattiesburg.
Veterans Memorial Park is a sacred space which remembers the courage of all who have served in defense of our nation, particularly the 173 individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Mayor Toby Barker said in a media release. “ Courage is a fitting artistic addition to the park, as it honors the people and institutions that gave our community its strength and character. ....
