As the vaccination rollout continues, there have been some reports of people receiving a different vaccine for their second shot than their first.
A News 8 viewer sent us an email saying it happened to him at Scripps.
While there aren t statistics showing how often the mixing of vaccines happens, medical experts agree, it s pretty rare.
But, is it dangerous?
News 8 checked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as Dr. Marlene Millen. She s the chief medical information officer for UC San Diego Health. ....

Big demand arrives on first day of wide-open vaccine access in San Diego

A surge of demand arrived in San Diego County Thursday on the first day that anyone age 16 or older could make a coronavirus vaccination appointment after four months of the supply being restricted by age, occupation or medical status.
New rules did not just affect vaccine eligibility. Indoor and outdoor entertainment venues gained additional operating capacities Thursday though most organizations, including the San Diego Padres, say they are not quite ready to test the limits of what’s now allowed in the orange tier of the state’s reopening system.
The frenzy started on Wednesday at UC San Diego, which announced that it had about 3,000 appointments available Thursday at RIMAC Arena and that those in the soon-to-be eligible group could schedule their shots. Ordinarily, it would have taken a couple days to fill those open slots. This time, it took five hours, according to Dr. Marlene Millen, one of the leaders of UCSD Health’s COVID-19 vaccine operations tea ....

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Petco Parkâs vaccination super station will be closed Sunday, Feb. 14 through Tuesday, Feb. 16 because of a vaccine shortage. San Diego County announced Friday that a shipment of the Moderna vaccine was delayed and will be arriving Tuesday.
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday appointments will be automatically rescheduled through the UCSD MyChart appointment system and an email will be sent to those individuals. ....

Vaccine Distribution for Seniors 65 and Over

UC San Diego Heath is however, focusing on some patients ages 75 and up.
“The patients we notified were ones that had multiple medical conditions things like heart disease or lung disease or history of active cancer,” said Millen. “Those folks are at higher risk of the disease. So trying to get them in as quickly as possible was important to us.”
UC San Diego Health, like other healthcare providers, is asking people not to contact them.
They are notifying the patients who are next in line in the health systems online portal, by email, or by phone.
And they are also working to make sure patients getting home healthcare are not overlooked. ....
