The University of Utah's new chief safety officer has applied for a job in Michigan

The two highest ranked leaders over security at the school came to the U. in the wake of student-athlete Lauren McCluskey’s murder in October 2018, which raised serious concerns about how the officers there responded to crimes and treated female victims. They’ve both been in their respective positions for less than a year. But dysfunction has continued to dog the department in that time.
“The caliber of candidates has been very strong national candidates with extensive experience in crisis situations, public safety priorities for college campuses and the ability to lead a large, diverse team,” said MSU’s Alan Haller, deputy athletic director and search committee chair, when the three finalists were named earlier this month. Crime Report From University Of Utah Shows Sharp Increase In Rape And Stalking Incidents Last Year

The University of Utah released a campus safety report Tuesday.
Reports of rape at the University of Utah rose almost 70%, and stalking incidents more than doubled last year, compared to 2018.
That’s according to a campus safety report released Tuesday by the school. The analysis uses data from a number of offices at the U, including the Department of Public Safety and Housing and Residential Education.
Chris Nelson, a spokesperson for the university, said it’s difficult to know how well the number of reported incidents reflects actual cases because rape and stalking tend to be underreported.
“We hope that the numbers reflect the increased resources available to assist victims and support them through the reporting process,” Nelson said. ....

The University of Utah on Friday confirmed campus police Chief Rodney Chatman is on leave due to an ongoing investigation by the Utah Attorney General s Office.

Chief Safety Officer Marlon Lynch issued a statement saying he would not normally comment on personnel matters, but decided to clarify the circumstances surrounding Chatman s suspension for the sake of transparency.
A lawyer representing former University of Utah police officers alleged Chatman was not certified by the Peace Officer Standards and Training board when he was hired. This is true, Lynch stated, but he clarified that Chatman had one year to become a certified peace officer in the state of Utah after he was hired in February. Chatman was formerly the campus police chief at the University of Dayton in Ohio. ....
