MUSKOGEE, Okla. -
The 5 children who died in Muskogee in a shooting earlier this month have been laid to rest.
The mayor, Marlon Coleman, describes Saturday s funeral service as somber but celebratory of the 5 young lives - gone too soon. There s no way to have a joyous occasion in such a time of despair, Coleman told News on 6, the shock and horror that 5 children are gone are going to be with us for some time. I don t think cards or the funeral will help in the short term.
Coleman tells News on 6 the service was all about remembering those five children agree ranging from one year old to nine. The family gave permission for News on 6 to be outside of the funeral on Saturday afternoon. Friends and family walked out of the service tearful and emotional. Muskogee Police officers were also there to show their support.
Muskogee Mayor Asks Community To Continue Supporting Mother Of 5 Children Killed In Shooting
The Mayor of Muskogee says the community is still in shock after last week s murder of 6 people, including 5 children ages ranging from 1 to 9.
Mayor Marlon Coleman says the city has stepped up with prayers and support but says this family needs more help financially.
“We want to be certain that we send a clear message as the days go forward that we want young families to know Muskogee is a place to live work and play. Not a place we can get away with murder,” Mayor Coleman said in a press conference Wednesday.
Muskogee Community Mourns 6 Victims Of Deadly Shooting
In Muskogee Wednesday night, about 60 people sang and prayed for the five children and man who were shot and killed in their home Tuesday. The kids were between the ages of one and nine.
The park outside the Muskogee Civic Center was filled with heavy grief as people honored the loss of those six souls and prayed for the children s mother who is still recovering in the hospital.
Muskogee Mayor Marlon Coleman said it s been tough for his community. I can t even describe how I m feeling, Coleman said. For me, as the leader of this city as well as the pastor of a church that Brittany and her sisters frequently attended when they were kids - grief would be an understatement.
