Husband-and-wife architects Melissa Szpik Serrao and Jay Serrao have been practicing together for more than a quarter century. They met in the mid-1990s as architecture students at California College of the Arts and worked for the same downtown San Francisco firm before founding their own design and architectural firm in 1998.
In 2007, the couple bought an urban infill lot in Sacramento’s Land Park neighborhood, walkable to a number of nearby amenities. A move of their practice and family followed (Serrao is a Sacramento native). With an urban site, they felt it was important to address the street, but also focus inward to create privacy. The office, which is a more public space, is oriented toward the north and faces the street. Having built homes in Squaw Valley (home to the 1960 Winter Olympics) and many others throughout the Lake Tahoe region, San Francisco–based Faulkner Architects is no stranger to designing for snowy climates. Their latest project, a 4,500-square-foot vacation home in Truckee’s Martis Valley, also illustrates the firm’s careful attention to climate and site. With a client that wanted a secluded and tranquil home in the forest, Faulkner Architects carefully embedded the structure within the landscape that features over 100 trees including old-growth Jeffrey, Sugar pine, and White and Red fir. ....

USFS acquires 120 acres on Brockway Summit to protect from development

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Much sought-after parcels of land near Northstar Ski Resort have been purchased by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). The purchase brings to a close proposed developments which over the years have included 112 ridgeline homes and the Brockway Campground, a sprawling resort with 550 campsites and commercial and additional commercial facilities.
LTBMU used funds from the Santini-Burton Act to purchase two parcels that total approximately 120.4 acres of Brockway Summit land on the rim of the Tahoe Basin.
“We are excited to announce the completion of this long-awaited purchase,” said Deputy Forest Supervisor, Danelle D. Harrison. “By adding this parcel to the National Forest System, we can better protect the water quality, scenic and recreational resources and help preserve the quality of experience on the Tahoe Rim Trail, which is adjacent to the property.� ....
