Rolling blackouts that crippled Texas during the deadly winter storm last week were worse than those during California’s wildfires last year, according to a new report.
ERCOT, the manager of Texas self-contained power grid, said about 43 gigawatts of power went offline during the worst of the power crisis, representing about half of the system’s capacity estimated at about 86,000 gigawatts. Texas was short about 20 to 25 gigawatts of power, or about enough to power 4 million to 5 million homes, for three straight days as temperatures plunged to near record low

It s so bad that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the legislature to reform the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which is in charge of delivering electricty throughout the state.
Because of ERCOT, Texas is lauded for energy independence through a world-class power grid. It only took a day of cold for the infrastructure to virtually crumble, leaving millions of Texans in the cold.
