Area restaurant group to boost employee minimum wage to $15


PHILADELPHIA — The Marquis & Co. restaurant group has announced plans to raise the minimum wage for employees of its area restaurants to $15. The increase is expected to begin in all of the company’s restaurants at the beginning of Q3 2021. The minimum wage is currently $7.25.
The company said it is making the change in part to “recognize the hardships that workers have experienced during the past year, especially women and people of color,” according to a press release. For tipped workers, the restaurant group will ensure that earnings reach a minimum of $15 per hour.
Marquis & Co. is a Philadelphia-based Latina woman-led plant-based restaurant group that includes nine restaurants in the region: HipCityVeg has five locations including Radnor (1), Ardmore (1), Philadelphia (3) and Washington, D.C. Philadelphia-based Marquis & Co. a Latina-led vegan restaurant group which includes popular chain HipCityVeg is taking the lead on implementing a $15 minimum wage across its restaurants. In March, proposed legislation to increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 per hour was dropped from the American Rescue Plan (the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus plan). Instead of waiting for the federal wage to increase, Marquis & Co. is taking action to help families recover from the life-changing events of last year, which disproportionately affected women and people of color. Starting in the third quarter of 2021, all nine Marquis & Co. restaurants, including HipCityVeg, Charlie was a sinner, and Bar Bombón, will bring worker earnings up to a minimum of $15 per hour.  ....

The Marquis & Co. restaurant group owners of vegan restaurants HipCityVeg, Bar Bombón, and Charlie Was a Sinner announced today that it will be instituting a $15 dollar minimum wage for all employees across its nine restaurants. The change will take place in July of this year and will ensure that both hourly and tipped workers will make at minimum $15 an hour.
“This is going to affect 75 percent of our Philadelphia workforce,” founder Nicole Marquis says. In Pennsylvania, the minimum wage is currently $7.25. In D.C., where there are two HipCityVeg locations, the minimum wage is already $15. “Our [tipped] servers and bartenders make well above $15 an hour already, but our food runners, our bussers, our barbacks may not.” ....
