The case against a white, former police officer who was charged in the fatal shooting of a Black man in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center will proceed with a trial starting as early as December, a judge ruled Monday. 
Kim Potter, a decorated, 26-year police veteran, resigned days after shooting 20-year-old Daunte Wright last month. The tragedy occurred a few miles from where George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin less than a year earlier, and it took place days before Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. ....

Brooklyn Center approves policing changes after Daunte Wright shooting


The Brooklyn Center city council voted 4-1 on Saturday for a resolution to create new divisions of unarmed civilian employees to handle non-moving traffic violations and respond to mental health crises.
The resolution also limits situations in which officers can make arrests and requires more de-escalation efforts by police before using deadly force.
A new Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention is envisioned, to oversee efforts on community health and public safety, led by a director with public health expertise.
The city attorney has said adopting the resolution isn’t a final action, but commits the city to change. ....

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott is proposing major changes to public safety in the Twin Cities suburb, nearly a month after the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.
Elliott told residents at a meeting Saturday, May 8, that his proposal would add more tools to our toolbox to appropriately respond when members of our community are in grave need. And he urged city council members to act quickly to approve the measure. ....
