Muskegon School District pauses in-person learning for grades 6-12 Updated 8:49 PM; Facebook Share MUSKEGON, MI – Muskegon Public Schools is pausing in-person learning for some students amid a recent increase of COVID-19 cases in the district. Students in grades 6-12 switched to online-only classes on Friday, April 16, and will continue learning remotely through Friday, April 23, according to an April 15 letter to families from Muskegon Superintendent Matthew Cortez. “I am writing in response to the current COVID-19 rates in our Middle School and High School levels,” Cortez wrote. “Ninety percent (90%) of the cases we are seeing are at the 6-12 grade level.”

Hammond honors educators in education during Black History Month observance

HAMMOND — African Americans have “provided significant contributions to every walk of life,” including education, said Councilman Barry Tyler, D-3rd. Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr., the Department of Community Development, the Black History Coalition Committee and the Hammond Human Relations Commission hosted a virtual Black History Month celebration Friday at City Hall. The theme was “2021 Leadership in Education” and honored black principals and assistant principals. Tyler said the celebration can “shine light on local heroes,” and provide reminders of the prejudices their predecessors faced. “We see you and we appreciate you,” Tyler said.
