Marquette Township house fire injures one


MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI    One person was taken to the hospital following a house fire in Marquette Township Sunday.
Firefighters were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to 695 County Road 492 in Deer Track Village and found heavy smoke coming from the building.
Crews entered the house, attacked the fire and located one person, who was taken to UPHS-Marquette. Their condition is unknown at this time.
A dog in the home was able to get out on its own.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal.

MARQUETTE Michigan health officials on Wednesday urged primary care doctors to become COVID-19 vaccine providers.
In a Wednesday news conference, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said officials want to ensure broad access to vaccines in “trusted places” such as offices of individual doctors, pediatricians and family physicians; school clinics; federally qualified health centers; and pharmacies.
“I’m asking every primary care doctor to enroll as a vaccine provider,” Khaldun said. “The most important thing we can do right now is to make vaccines available for whenever someone is ready. We know that patients trust their doctors, and when they’re ready to get vaccinated, we want you to have vaccines on hand.” ....

Whitmer: 55% of adults have received at least 1 dose of vaccine | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday announced that 55% of Michiganders have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The announcement marks the first milestone of the “MI Vacc to Normal” plan, which would enable in-person work to resume across all employment sectors on May 24.
“Everyone is eligible to get their safe, effective shots, and it’s on all of us to get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect ourselves, our families and our communities,” Whitmer said in a statement. “On May 24, we anticipate allowing a return to in-person work across all sectors, and as more Michiganders get vaccinated, we will continue lifting restrictions to get ‘Vacc to Normal’ safely.” ....

Search for new Marquette city manager continues Saturday with public interviews | News, Sports, Jobs


MARQUETTE The city of Marquette is one step closer to hiring a city manager.
The candidate pool was narrowed down to six applicants during a closed session at the April 12 Marquette City Commission meeting. The candidate who is ultimately hired will succeed current city manager Mike Angeli, who is set to retire on June 1.
The city hired Walsh Municipal Services LLC in February to conduct the nationwide search process. The Okemos-based firm had previously worked with neighboring Marquette Township on its search for a new manager last year.
According to Walsh Municipal Services President Frank Walsh, the city received 40 applicants for the position. Of those applicants, 28 were current managers for their local municipalities. ....

A new recycling initiative is coming to Marquette County.
The “Every Bottle Back ” initiative is an effort to reduce the industry’s plastic footprint and keep bottles out of the environment.
“Specifically, we are talking about getting 4,450 carts out in Ishpeming, Marquette Township and Negaunee Township. The goal is to be able to give people easier access to recycle things. I think as a society we want to do the right thing, we want to recycle, but it has to be convenient,” said Derek Bajema, President of the Michigan Soft Drink Association. “This is opportunity for private industry to work alongside citizens and make it easy for folks. We think this is a great opportunity for Michigan to raise its recycling rate which is needs some work. It’s at 15%, one of the lowest in the nation and the lowest among our neighboring Great Lake States.” ....
