A satellite has captured strange rippled lines across parts of Russia s arctic, leaving scientists confused as to what they are. The photos were captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on NASA s Landsat 8 satellite and show the region on both sides of the Markha River in Russia s Central Siberian Plateau. While the intriguing striped effect is always there, it is more visible in winter when the white snow makes the patterns stand out. (NASA / Earth Observatory) The strange pattern is evident regardless of the time of year NASA scientists believe the cause of the effect is because this part of the Central Siberian Plateau is covered in permafrost for over 90 per cent of the year, sometimes melting for short intervals. ....
Close In Arctic Siberia, near the Markha River, the earth ripples in ways that scientists does not fully understand and can t affirm why these hills in the Russian Arctic ripple with stripes. NASA researchers posted earlier this week, a set of satellite images of the strange wrinkled landscape to the Earth Observatory website of the agency. (Photo : Space X) Conflicting Explanations Given to NASA The photos, taken with the Landsat 8 satellite display the land on both sides of the Markha River waving with flipping dark and light stripes. The puzzling effect is apparent in all four seasons, but it is obvious in winter when white snow makes a conflicting pattern even harsher. ....
NASA shares images of odd landscape near Markha River in Siberia leaving scientists puzzled - Situated near the Markha River in Arctic Siberia, the ripples created near the banks alternate between dark and light stripes. ....
Mysterious ripples on swirling hills captured by NASA Landsat-8 leave scientists stumped The pictures taken by a NASA satellite Landsar-8 show presence of an odd landscape in the cold Arctic depths of Siberia in Russia, near the Markha River with widespread ripples. advertisement Representative Image In a unique observation, some images of a phenomenon clicked by a NASA satellite orbiting the Earth has taken the scientists by surprise. The images, taken by satellite Landsar-8 over several years, were recently shared by the space agency NASA on its Earth Observatory website. The pictures show presence of an odd landscape in the cold Arctic depths of Siberia in Russia, near the Markha River with widespread ripples. ....
