The folk tale tradition from fairy tales to ghost stories has origins stretching back to the start of human speech. The art of oral storytelling predates the written word, and has been used for time immemorial for recording information, teaching morality, and untangling some of life s greatest mysteries.
Stacker surveyed film history and compiled a list of movies across decades, countries, and genres that drew their inspiration from the folk tale tradition, with accompanying IMDb and Metacritic data. The 25 films chosen are organized alphabetically. To qualify, the film had to be inspired by a folk or fairy tale (or tales) and have at least 2,500 votes. Some that made the list are direct reimaginings of classic tales, such as ....

Insane flavour
Let ’s begin with a film from the days before this retro-futurist wave, but which gave us food nostalgia served up on a silver platter.
Soylent Green, a film directed by Richard Fleischer in 1973, describes a world ravaged by pollution and global warming and dominated by the multinational Soylent corporation that makes pink, blue or green (the best) crackers, supposedly manufactured with plank-ton to feed an overpopulated world. In this prophetic film – it takes place in 2022 (only five years away!) – Charlton Heston plays a New York policeman who discovers, while working his final investigation, that the raw material for these delicious crackers is none other than the flesh of people who have agreed to be euthanised in exchange for watching a 3D cinematic spectacular of what life on earth looked like before their b ....

Isle Of Dogs, Sunday, Channel 4, 6.05pm
Wes Anderson is one of the quirkiest and most consistently inventive directors working today. Films such as The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou are cult items, while his 2014 crowd-pleaser The Grand Budapest Hotel brought deserved wins at the Oscars and the Golden Globes and his 2009 stop-motion animation Fantastic Mr Fox is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Anderson blends the whimsy of directors such as Whit Stillman and Hal Ashby (both big influences) with the oddball world-building of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of arthouse hits Amelie and (with Marc Caro) Delicatessen. But on top of all that he adds something uniquely his own – a very particular world-view – and an ability to draw to his work a roster of regular collaborators which reads like a Who’s Who of everyone’s favourite actors. Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum and Tilda Swinton lead the list. ....
