Some of the work carried out by the Deli staff and volunteers INDEPENDENT sandwich shop, Newton Deli has been awarded the Lunch! Independent Retailer Community Award in recognition of their Covid-19 pandemic response. Staff at Newton Deli based at their Wargrave Road branch and volunteers with their not for profit community organisation Nobody Should Be Hungry CIC have worked alongside other small businesses, community groups and residents to help coordinate and deliver a strong community response to the pandemic. This work has been recognised by the judging panel at the British Sandwich and Food To Go Association, with the company being nominated, shortlisted and ultimately making the final of the prestigious national award, beating stiff competition from independent businesses up and down the country to secure the 2021 title. ....
Volunteers outside The Victoria pub, including Kath O Neill, licensee of the pub A COMMUNITY project which has helped the vulnerable throughout the pandemic has launched a school uniform bank and other projects. The Helping Hands project, with Newton and Earlestown Community Group (NECG) is again seeking to help residents in need. As well as a school uniform bank, the project is collecting IT equipment to work with the Hope Centre in St Helens to distribute to those in need. After launching in the initial lockdown last spring, Helping Hands has delivered around 12 tonnes of food, collected prescriptions and driven around 2,500 miles thanks to the efforts of its team of around 150 volunteers. ....
St Helens Council responds to demand for school places ST HELENS Council is working closely with schools to ensure “safe and manageable” numbers of children can attend during lockdown, a senior officer has said. Across the country, schools have seen a high demand for places for children of key workers and vulnerable pupils, after pupils were instructed to work from home in response to surging Covid infections across the country. Reports of critical workers being denied a place for their children have been widespread, including in St Helens, as school leaders attempt to balance demand and the safety of pupils and staff. ....
