In January 2018 the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recorded that Turkish-led airstrikes were forcing the displacement of thousands of people in Afrin, northern Syria.
“Over the 21 and 22 January period, many incidents of shelling and aerial bombardment were reported.. Hostilities reportedly caused people, especially those residing in communities near the border, to flee their homes to nearby caves in pursuit of safety.”
“Local sources reported an incident of shelling on a poultry farm which hosted a number of [internally displaced persons] from southern rural Idleb within Afrin. The incident reportedly resulted in the death of seven people, including five children.” ....

An Italian fisher wounded when his trawler was machined-gunned by the Libyan coastguard was fired on from a boat supplied by Italy’s government to help Tripoli control the flow of migrants, the Guardian can reveal.
Libyan authorities, who say the coastguard vessel fired warning shots into the air, said three Italian fishing vessels had entered Libyan territorial waters without authorisation before the incident on Thursday, the latest episode in a territorial dispute involving crews from the Sicilian port of Mazara del Vallo who fish for red prawns off the Libyan coast. ....

LONDON: A Libyan coastguard vessel involved in the shooting of a Sicilian fisherman on May 6 was given to Tripoli by Italy to stop the flow of migrants across the Mediterranean, it has emerged.
Col. Massoud Abdalsamad of the Libyan coastguard told Italian media that the ship “fired warning shots into the air against vessels which had allegedly trespassed into Libyan waters.” Three Italian fishing boats had entered its territorial waters without permission in search of red prawns.
Giuseppe Giacalone, captain of one of the fishing boats, told Italian news agency ANSA: “It is a miracle we are alive. We were shot at. The cabin of our boat is full of holes. ....
