La Mesa council member Dr. Akilah Weber will take the Assembly seat formerly held by her mother, according to results certified Thursday by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Weber won a special election held April 6 with 33,197 votes, or 51.97 percent of the 64,189 ballots cast. With a majority of votes in the primary, she avoided a run-off election tentatively scheduled for June, which would have been held if no candidate earned more than 50 percent of the vote.
The position became open in January, when former Assembly member Shirley Weber, who had held the office for a decade, was appointed to serve as California secretary of state. ....

Weber Claims Victory in 79th Assembly District Special Election

The younger Weber, a Democratic La Mesa City Councilmember, had nearly 52% of the vote in the special election, according to final unofficial election-night results released Thursday by the Registrar of Voters.
A June runoff is possible if the leading vote-getter received less than 50% of votes, but with just 300 outstanding ballots, according to the Registrar of Voters, Weber appears to be on her way to victory.
Marco Contreras, the lone Republican in the field of five candidates and Weber s closest competitor, has not conceded the race.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - La Mesa City Councilwoman Akilah Weber Thursday evening was elected to the 79th Assembly District seat her mother Shirley held from 2012 until being appointed secretary of state in December.
The Democrat has 51.97% of the vote with about 300 ballots left to be counted from Tuesday s special election, according to figures released Thursday by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Marco Contreras, the lone Republican in the field of five candidates, was second with 33.43%, the only other candidate with more than 9%. Under state law, a candidate receiving a majority in a special election primary is elected to the office without a runoff. ....
