Floods could triple across Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau as planet warms By (0) As glaciers melt faster and faster, glacial lakes in the Himalayan region are swelling, increasing flood risks, according to new research. Photo by Heng Li May 6 (UPI) As the global temperature continue to climb and glaciers melt more rapidly, new research suggests the risk of flooding across the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau could triple. In addition to putting communities and infrastructure in harms way, the predicted increase in lake outburst floods detailed Thursday in the journal Nature Climate Change could jeopardize water supplies in politically fragile regions like Kashmir. ....
Glacial lake in the Himalayan region. (Credit: Heng Li) (CN) Spurred by climate change, glacial retreat is intensifying across much of the Eastern Himalayas known as Earth’s “Third Pole” threatening vulnerable downstream communities with torrential floods. The Hindu Kush-Himalaya, Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas contain more glaciers than anywhere else on Earth outside of the North and South poles, which is where their nickname comes from. Rising temperatures across the region in recent years are melting these ancient glaciers at an alarming pace when that occurs too quickly, the result is a “glacial lake outburst flood.” These floods occur when a lake that formed below a melting glacier essentially bursts at the seams. They can devastate communities hundreds of miles downstream and across international boundaries, further complicating prevention and relief efforts, especially in politically sensitive areas like the Pamir region between Tajikist ....
Share The “Third Pole” of the Earth, the high mountain ranges of Asia, bears the largest number of glaciers outside the polar regions. A Sino-Swiss research team has revealed the dramatic increase in flood risk that could occur across Earth’s icy Third Pole in response to ongoing climate change. Focusing on the threat from new lakes forming in front of rapidly retreating glaciers, a team, led by researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, demonstrated that the related flood risk to communities and their infrastructure could almost triple. Important new hotspots of risk will emerge, including within politically sensitive transboundary regions of the Himalaya and Pamir. With significant increases in risk already anticipated over the next three decades, the results of the study, published in ....
