Government-backed coins and private cryptocurrencies will coexist for a while, despite rising regulatory walls set by the government to counter virtual coins, experts at a global webinar session said Thursday.
Noting that cryptocurrencies and digital currencies by governments are “two different animals,” they will coexist for now partly because current cryptocurrencies are not actually solving payment problems.
“How many of them (cryptocurrencies) are solving actual payment problem? Most of them are speculative and used as a means of storage,” said Nelson Chow, chief fintech officer of the Fintech Facilitation Office at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

Singapore-based global digital and crypto assets exchange Zipmex has appointed TSLA to launch the brand across Southeast Asia and Australia. TSLA s design practice will manage brand strategy, positioning and design duties, and work is expected to roll out in the second half of the year. No pitch was called and the appointment comes as Zipmex gears up to grow its presence in Asia Pacific.
In the past six months, Zipmex said it has recorded a 50-time increase in assets under management and a revenue increase of 250 times. Last month, Zipmex said it recorded an all-time high daily transactions of THB3,800 million and a strong database of mass to premium customers. It is operating in a regulatory-compliant manner across Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Australia.

Yiâs Nation V2 preserved their unbeaten record in the 5.11 National Basketball League after a 86-69 victory over Team 409 at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat last night.
The title-chasing Yiâs Nation V2 registered a sixth consecutive victory in the tournament with two remaining matches to play. They will be fighting against Easyway Basketball, who are also undefeated on May 2 and their sister team Yiâs Nation on May 7.
Despite the difference in league positions, it was the underdogs Team 409 who brought the game to the favourites, using a sequence of passes to take the early lead.

The group has pledged ‘to develop mediation into a recognised and viable profession’ in a move that builds on the Singapore Convention on Mediation, which came into force last September and which allows for the easier enforcement by national courts of international settlement agreements, much as the New York Convention does for arbitration awards.
