Midway through 2020, a year in which many people abandoned office attire for the warm embrace of sweatpants, the Toronto-based sustainable fashion label Encircled launched its “comfy dress shirt.” Cut from Modal, a soft, jersey-like fibre made from beechwood pulp, the $134 top represented a happy medium between pre- and post pandemic dressing: relaxed yet still dressy enough to wear for endless Zoom meetings. It sold out in less than 48 hours.

Margaret Godfrey was able to visit her 93-year-old mum Winnie Mulgrew and hold hands with her for the first time in more than a year.

Staff in a Chigwell care home brought together a mum and daughter on Mother s Day to hold each other s hands for the first time in a year.
Winnie Mulgrew, 93, lives at Lambwood Heights in Lambourne Road and had not been able to touch her daughter, Margaret Godfrey, since coronavirus restrictions began last March.
The pair had only been able to meet on either side of a clear screen in the home’s summer house, and Winnie found it difficult to understand why the two of them could not be together.

If you ve ever driven by University Park in Eugene, you may have noticed a group throwing small balls around the softball diamond there.
The game is called pétanque. The current version of the sport originated in 1907 in Provence, France. It is similar to bocce and involves players or teams “shooting or pointing” boules (metal balls) toward a target ball.
“You have to be over 60 and have prostate problems to play,” joked Dan Claycomb, 68, after shooting a ball toward the target.
His opponent in the game this day, Ray Peterson, 71, quipped back, “Don’t use that quote,” he said, laughing. “We are trying to encourage women and young people to join us.”
