PUUNENE Wind. Drought. Pests. Farming in Central Maui already holds a unique set of challenges. Add a global pandemic and agriculture operations are tested in a whole new way.
So Mahi Pono, the largest agriculture company on Maui, has made key changes to its operations in light of coronavirus.
The pandemic affected everything from shipping costs a 46 percent increase in Young Brothers rates took effect last year to in-field work that needed COVID-19 safety protocols. Restaurants and hotels major markets for local produce closed, causing the company to look at the type and scale of its crops.

Charlie Favia of Kihei rides through a Puunene dust cloud kicked up gusting winds Saturday morning along Maui Veterans Highway. Favia said the trade winds can be a hindrance or a help on the Kihei-Kahului round trip. “You’ve got to get up early to beat the trades,” he said. “And then it is a cruise going back. Martha Ann Cockett, 93, of Wailuku, passed on November 22, 2020.
Services will be held at Nakamura Mortuary on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. with service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Maui Veterans Cemetery.

Mrs. Cockett was the owner of a wig shop.
She is survived by her husband,Edmund Cockett; and daughter, Diane Azevado of Nevada.
