Celebrate World Ocean Day during June By Staff | May 28, 2021 MAALAEA Launched in 1992, World Ocean Day is a global movement that takes place annually on June 8 and unites conservation leaders and environmentally conscientious individuals and organizations in addressing the myriad threats facing marine wildlife and ecosystems. In recognition of this auspicious day, Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) will offer events and programs throughout the month of June designed to inspire awareness of our blue planet and the ocean that directly or indirectly sustains all life. On June 7, PWF Conservation Coordinator Shelby Serra will host Responsible Recipes, a pre-recorded cooking presentation that underscores the importance of choosing fish and other seafood that is sustainably harvested.

MAKAWAO Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center is proud to launch #HuiKids a free online learning channel where kids can create art remotely alongside hui teaching artists. Each year, the hui typically serves over 1,300 Maui students through its field trip program, in addition to 285 students each month in partnering public schools through the Na Keiki No’eau after school outreach program. “Outreach programs all came to a halt in March, after which we immediately started brainstorming ways to continue reaching these students. We also knew that children have bonded with our teaching artists, so we wanted to find a way for them to still interact with their favorite art teachers, even though we couldn’t meet in person, and
