Abdul Hamid was a little wary of coming to Bhasan Char with his wife and three children in December last year. He had heard the island on the Bay of Bengal was susceptible to cyclones and people told him such an event would simply sweep him off the island. He was therefore a little apprehensive when relatives from Cox s Bazar recently called to say Cyclone Yaas was headed his way. But after seeing the contingencies in place, Abdul Hamid seemed confident of his and his family s safety even if the weather worsened. Officials have held meetings and started public announcements telling us which shelter to go to if the situation deteriorates, said Hamid yesterday while standing in front of a warehouse in Bhasan Char as conditions started to become a little gusty. ....
The government is planning a foreign diplomats visit to Bhasan Char. Over 7,000 Rohingyas have already been relocated to the island from Cox s Bazar and more will be joining them in the coming days. We are planning, especially for our friendly ambassadors who want to support us, a visit to Bhasan Char soon, Commodore AA Mamun Chowdhury, project director of Ashryan-3 at Bhasan Char, told The Daily Star during a visit by a group of journalists to the project on February 9-10. Bangladesh Navy has implemented the Tk 3,100 crore housing project at Bhasan Char in Noakhali s Hatiya upazila for 100,000 Rohingyas from Cox s Bazar. The initiative was taken after some 750,000 Rohingyas fled a military crackdown in Myanmar s Rakhine State in 2017 and took shelter in Teknaf and Ukhia. ....
Khaleda Begum had little to do other than helping her mother with household chores. The 17-year-old would spend most of her time indoors, back at the Rohingya camp in Cox s Bazar. Being from a conservative family, she had not expected her life to change much but surprisingly it did, and it did for the better. Khaleda has been learning to tailor dresses and operate sewing machines since her arrival at Bhasan Char. She is feeling a drive within herself to become solvent. At least I ve got something to do now. I will be able to make my own dresses and earn in the future by doing it for others, she told this correspondent at the island, around 40km off Noakhali, a couple of days ago. ....
Shafika and Jhunjhuni are inseparable. Fondly named after Shafika s favourite toy from when she was a toddler, the Black Bengal follows Shafika everywhere. The two looked very happy as they pranced towards the large playground under the bright morning sun yesterday. In fact, that was the first thing that Shafika and most likely Jhunjhuni too noticed, when they reached Bhasan char along with other refugees from the Cox s Bazar camps. We did not have anything like this [playground] at the camps. And the roads were hilly, she said, beaming at this correspondent. Yesterday a total of 1,776 Rohingyas arrived at Bhasan Char in the third batch while another 1,800 are expected to arrive today, said A A Mamun Chowdhury, project director of Ashrayan Project-3. ....
