Uncle Nearest Whiskey launches fund to support minority-owned spirits


The first two companies slated to receive investments are:
Equiano, a London-based Afro-Caribbean rum brand founded by Ian Burrell and Aaisha Dadral and named in honor of writer and abolitionist Olaudah Equiano, who was enslaved at 11 years old and later bought his freedom using money he earned trading rum.
Jack From Brooklyn, Inc., the first-known Black-owned distillery in the country following Prohibition.
The fund is now accepting applications on its website.

Jack From Brooklyn, Inc., founded by Jackie Summers, is the maker of Sorel Liqueur, a traditional Caribbean liqueur blending flavors of hibiscus, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon. Sorel will make its comeback to the spirits market this year thanks to Uncle Nearest Venture Fund s investment. ....

Anyone who believes whiskey is a man’s drink probably hasn’t gotten out of the house in the last decade. In fact, women make up nearly 40% of whiskey consumers, according to a recent study by MRI-Simmons. And behind the scenes, women are taking on more leadership roles in the distillery than ever.
We wanted to highlight a handful of women in the whiskey industry, and that list quickly grew to 22. This is only the tip of the iceberg. To keep it manageable, we decided to limit the list to those working in the United States and those working in distilling and/or ownership roles. Each week this month, we also will take a deeper dive with some of the women here, so stay tuned. ....
