John Lewis: Former store could get new lease of life as rooftop restaurant

The site of Aberdeen’s John Lewis could be given a new lease of life as a rooftop restaurant, an expert has claimed.
John Lewis announced earlier this year that its flagship store in Norco House on George Street would not reopen following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Executives at the partnership, which employed 262 people at the branch before the closure, are yet to decide what will be done with the vast building.
Due to its size, the prospect of another retailer taking it over in its entirety is thought to be unlikely, and concerns have been expressed that the building could meet the same fate as the Broadford Works on Maberly Street, which lay empty for several years. ....

'Childish' man sentenced for kicking shoe that hit cop in groin

A man has described his own actions as “childish” after he admitted kicking his shoe at a police officer.
Upon being apprehended and searched, the 28-year old then lashed out at the officers and punted his footwear towards Constable Paul Mellor, which saw the shoe travel a short distance before striking him in his groin.

Three weeks of roadworks to remove George Street Spaces For People

Work to remove the Spaces For People measures in George Street, Aberdeen, will begin on August 9.
One way systems, bike lanes, white paint and hundreds of bollards are to be removed from George Street next month – as work begins to scale back physical distancing work in Aberdeen.
The city council has scheduled three weeks of roadworks in the busy residential and shopping area on the edge of the city centre to lift the temporary Spaces For People restrictions.
George Street and the surrounding area looks to be first in line to be liberated from the Covid restrictions, which have split traders across the city. ....

Demolition of former Aberdeen printworks ruled out in latest flats plans

Architects who saw plans to knock down a former Aberdeen printworks rejected last year have vowed to leave the granite building standing.
Their designers, Neil Rothnie Architecture, have now lodged new plans promising to retain as much of the printworks as is “practically possible”.
Matching their previous aspirations, the scheme would include 17 flats over four storeys, requiring a modern extension to the east of the main block.
New additions would be finished in light grey to tie in with the traditional granite front of the older part of the development, the designers said. ....
