Shelter Music Boston, the non-profit dedicated to bringing the dignity, creativity, and passion of classical music to Boston s homeless population, is partnering with the Native American Composters Apprentice Project (NACAP) to bring a new perspective on classical music to shelters and other programs around Boston.
Shelter Music Boston will release 12 videos called Voices From the Land which will feature original works by current NACAP students, alumni, and faculty from the Diné (Navajo), Hopi, Laguna, Salt River Pima-Maricopa, San Carlos Apache, and Tewa nations. Songwriting is a complex process. But writing a song during a pandemic with no recording experience nor equipment is even harder. Music students at the Grand Canyon School, a K-12 school located in the south rim of the Grand Canyon, were able to create an original song with virtual help from Grand Canyon School of Rock musicians. Their song was later featured at the Grand Canyon Music Festival.
“Breakdown Lockdown” is an ode to living during a pandemic as a teenager; it captures the frustrations of isolation and coping with anxiety. Even with all the limitations, Robert Boaz Curry-El, the band teacher at the Grand Canyon School, wanted his students to participate in the festival.
