Thatch: humble yet elegant roofing material in search of a new lease of life

Thatch: humble yet elegant roofing material in search of a new lease of life May 27 06:34 am JST May 27 | 06:46 am JST TOKYO In England and Denmark, there are still entire villages of thatched houses. While it is expensive to thatch a roof in those countries, it is not prohibitively so, and the tradition of thatching is very much alive. In Japan, however, the era of the thatched roof is coming to an end. You can still see examples of thatching on the roofs of a few surviving temples, teahouses, farmhouses and cultural landmarks protected by the government. But the number of full-time professional thatchers still working in Japan can probably be counted on the fingers of two hands.

Untouched Beauty: The World's Forbidden Destinations – Luxury Escapes Magazine

Share Varsha Rao, Staff Writer When it comes to travel, the world is your oyster…except for a select few places that are out of reach for everybody. While some are closely guarded by indigenous tribes others are home to active volcanoes, or so fragile they cannot survive human interference. Let us take you on a virtual journey of the mysterious lands largely untouched by humankind. Lascaux Caves, France Home to prehistoric paintings more than 17,000 years old, Lascaux Caves in the Vézère Valley in France offer a glimpse into life during the Paleolithic era. Around 1,500 engravings and 600 drawings dot the caves and mostly depict animals, humans and hunting scenes. Originally open to the public, the site was closed in1963 after increasing human presence damaged the art and artificial lighting and air-conditioning took their toll on the precious etchings. These days, budding archaeologists must satisfy themselves with virtual video tours.

The traveller is being caged within his four walls, travel bags are being mothballed and what was once called the travel bug is not biting anyone. Dream destinations will have to wait but here’s some virus solace - Corona or not, here are 10 places that you could not have visited even on a happy day. © Provided by Moneycontrol Travel 2 Area 51 (USA): Not many know its official name: Homey Airport (KXTA) or Groom Lake named after a neighbouring salt flat. But tucked in the Nevada Desert, Area 51 is the conspiracy theorists favourite scrap of land. In use since 1955 as a US Air Force military facility, no one knows what happens within the inaccessible, highly guarded Area 51. Conspiracy theorists believe it is the testing ground for aliens and UFOs. Do not try hopping into this forbidden area, the grounds are protected by mi
